Puppy With Toy

Crate Training Tips for Your New Pup

Puppy With ToyCrate training can help keep both your own and your new puppy’s sanity. While some people think locking a dog in a cage is mean, well-adjusted dogs see their crate as a cozy place to head for a nap. Here’s how you can make sure your pup sees their crate as a happy place.

Go Slow

The best time to get a new puppy is over the holidays or when you have other vacation time to burn. Your puppy needs to get used to being around and in the crate over time. Don’t traumatize your puppy by suddenly locking them up as you head off to work.

Start out by simply leaving the door open for your puppy to explore. Then work your way up from keeping the door open for a few minutes to a few hours at a time.

Give the Crate a Positive Meaning

Your puppy should associate the crate with good things. Never use the crate as a timeout or punishment, especially if you’ve just scolded your pup.

A comfortable bed and blanket are the bare minimum. The crate is also a good place to store toys so your puppy gets used to going in and out for good reasons.

Extending Crate Time

Especially early on, your puppy might put up a fuss once you close the door. Try to ignore their whining and head to another room, but if the whining doesn’t stop once you’re gone, let them out—ignoring the whining for hours won’t build patience or a love of their crate.

Instead, leave your dog outside of their crate and lock their favorite toys and a treat inside. Once your pup lets you know they want in, let them in and close the door. From there, keep working your go-slow approach to building up the time they spend inside.

Another trick for extending crate time is to carry or direct your dog into the crate when you see them getting ready for a nap. This will teach them to seek out their crate for a break on their own.

Santa Hat

Attend SantaCon Stamford 2017!

Santa HatWhether you get a kick out of the costume or you just like seeing kids smile, dressing up as Santa Claus is a time-honored tradition that really should be encouraged. It’s why Stamford holds its own SantaCon on December 2! Learn more about what it’s all about, and why this unique event may be just what you need to kick off the season.

Who is SantaCon for?

SantaCon is meant for everyone! While Kris Kringle may have inspired Santa, the spirit of Christmas isn’t limited to one gender! While women can certainly dress up as Mrs. Claus, they don’t have to take a backseat any longer. Come in your favorite Christmas-themed costume and let yourself get swept away in the magic of becoming another character. You’ll have a chance to talk to different people who want to do the same, and what you learn from the experience can get you in the right frame of mind for a truly festive holiday. Just think of all the kids you’ll delight when you up your Santa game for this year.

SantaCon Details

SantaCon starts at noon on December 2, and is being held on Bedford St. in downtown Stamford, CT. Tiernans Bar and Bradford’s Grill are just a few establishments that will be open to catch the holiday trade. People can come dressed as their favorite Christmas character, but costumes should be complete and mostly red (even elves). SantaCon is free, but there will be a place to contribute a donation to the event to ensure its continuation for next year. SantaCon is a place to let loose and have fun but also practice common sense (e.g., don’t become violent, no public intoxication). Although the purpose of SantaCon is to have a great time and be festive, it is important to also be safe and responsible.

Those who live in our Stamford apartments know just how fun it can be to be close to all the events and excitement happening in the downtown area. Slice of Pumpkin Pie

5 Pumpkin Dessert Recipes for Thanksgiving

Slice of Pumpkin PieIt’s easy to get a little burned out on pumpkin when October rolls around, as pumpkin-flavored everything seems to reach critical mass. But that’s no reason to turn up your nose at it when the main event comes around. If you have to, skip the rest of the pumpkin propaganda and save your appetite for these recipes.

1. Pumpkin Ice Cream

Sometimes, all the people in your home on Thanksgiving makes you wish you had something a little chillier than usual for your dessert. Use this dairy-free pumpkin ice cream as a way to refresh your palate after all that stuffing and turkey. Plus, it’s just as creamy as any of your traditional ice creams.

2. Chocolate-Pumpkin Fudge

If you’ve never had chocolate and pumpkin together, it’s time to rectify the situation right now. This recipe is excellent for those who might not be traditional pumpkin lovers (think: kids). It’s not only delicious, but also sugar-free, protein-packed, and no-bake.

3. Pumpkin Donuts

Just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean you don’t want something to dunk in your coffee at the end of the meal. These donuts are baked for a little less guilt, and they’re covered in cinnamon and sugar. Perfect for that little treat at the end of the meal.

4. Pumpkin Bread

For those in the household who may not want something super sweet, there’s pumpkin bread for just the right touch of flavor and spice. This particular dessert is also great for breakfast and goes perfectly with a little pat of butter on the side.

5. Pumpkin Pie

We had to include it in here for all the traditionalists in the crowd! But just because it’s an old favorite doesn’t mean its boring. This recipe seems to have gotten the proportions just right, so use it to get just the right amount of flavor into the after-dinner portion of your big meal.

Hosting Thanksgiving (or even just bringing dessert) may be a lot of work, but the rewards are always going to be worth the effort. If you’re looking for Stamford apartments that care about entertaining as much as you do, check out 75 Tresser for kitchens and dining rooms that will give you an entertaining edge and give us a call to schedule a tour!

Woman Holding a Flower

5 Random Acts of Kindness for World Kindness Day

Woman Holding a FlowerDid you know that November 13 is World Kindness Day? While one of the best things about living in our Stamford apartments is being able to enjoy the kindness that flows throughout the state, why not take the time to give a bit of kindness out into the world this World Kindness Day. You might find it pays off big, even if only putting you in a great mood. Here are 5 ideas for celebrating the day.

5 Great Ways to Celebrate World Kindness Day in Stamford, Connecticut This November

  1. Buy a coffee for a stranger: In Naples Italy, they have something called a caffè sospeso, which translates to suspended coffee. People stopping into their local cafe will drink and pay for their coffee of choice and pay for an additional one as well. When someone comes in who perhaps can’t afford to buy a coffee, they’ve already had one bought for them, by a friendly stranger. You can gift a coffee not only to someone in need but just to whoever happens to be standing behind you in Starbucks. Ask the cashier to charge you a couple of extra dollars, and take it off of the order of the next person.
  2. See some litter? Clean it up: You know what they say, the best things in life are free, and some of the best random acts of kindness you can perform won’t cost a dime. When you take some time to clean up debris and litter in a public area, you’re doing a favor for everyone who might come by the spot.
  3. Give a flower: Want to earn an instant smile? Hand a stranger a beautiful flower and say have a great day.
  4. Drop off a gift for a neighbor you’ve never met: We tend not to know our neighbors as well as we used to, some are perfect strangers. Why not bake some cookies and leave them for those neighbors to whom you’ve never even said hello.
  5. Give a compliment, or 10: From when you wake up in the morning on November 13, commit to paying 10 compliments throughout the day. Just be sure that you truly mean them and you’ll be brightening the day of everyone wherever you go.

After all of those good deeds, you’re likely to find you’ve accrued quite a lot of good karma. Nothing says you’re doing everything right in life more than finding a great deal on the perfect new home. To find out more about our various floor plans, give our office a call at (866) 616-8401.

Our Stamford apartments are conveniently located to enjoy events throughout the month of November. On November 19, you and your family can join the community to watch the Stamford Downtown Parade Spectacular or you can join in the event by volunteering for different roles within the parade.

The Parade

The Stamford Downtown Parade Spectacular is an annual event that draws a crowd each year. It is one of the largest parades with helium balloons in the country. When you and your loved ones enjoy the parade, you will see world-class helium balloons, marching bands and other parade participants.

Children will enjoy the fun music and giant balloons as they watch the parade move throughout Stamford. It is a fun event for all age groups and families can enjoy the event together. The parade starts at noon and will move from Summer Street to Broad Street and from Broad Street to Atlantic Street. Prepare for a fun event that gets the entire community ready for the holidays.

Volunteering for the Event

When you decide to volunteer at the event, you will have different roles available. You can sign up as a volunteer until November 6. Volunteers for the event have three possible roles and options.

They can work as a clown throughout the parade. Their role as a clown is getting the crowd to laugh and enjoy the event. If you are uncomfortable with the role of a clown, you can also volunteer as a balloon handler. You and a team of others will ensure that the balloons stay on track and move through the parade.

The final role of a volunteer during the event is a route marshal. As a route marshal, you ensure that the way is clear for the parade and you keep everything moving smoothly. The opportunities allow you to have fun during the parade while giving back to the community by handling important tasks. If you want to participate in a marching band or other groups within the parade, you will need to wait until next year. Marching bands and other groups sign up a year in advance to ensure they are prepared for the parade.

Candy Corn and Pumpkin

5 Scary Good Sweets to Make for Halloween

Candy Corn and PumpkinHere at our Stamford, CT apartments, we know how much our community members enjoy the spooky sweet treats that come along with Halloween. Here are some of our favorite Halloween edibles that can be created in minutes.

1. Peanut Butter Ghost Treats

These are quick and easy to make Halloween treats that everyone will love. All you need for this one is a bag of full-size peanut butter cups, a confectioners bag filled with whipped cream or meringue, and a small amount of melted chocolate. Simply create fluffy ghosts with your cream mixture atop the cups and use a toothpick dipped in the chocolate to create a ‘ghost face’ on each one.

2. Creepy Claw Cupcakes

Whip up a batch of red velvet cupcakes and top them with a thin layer of red gel icing or red jam followed by a layer of white icing. Then use a fork tong, knife or toothpick to create clawlike slashes through both layers of the icing, allowing the red to ooze out to resemble bloody claw marks. Deliciously spooky!

3. Candy Corn Cookies

A new twist on an old classic candy are these incredibly easy cookies. Using premade sugar cookie mix, just add a bit of orange food coloring and bake them like a rectangle cookie cake. Once cooled, cut them into triangle shapes and dip the small tip into white chocolate and the large end into dark chocolate to create fun Halloween treats.

4. Spooky Dark Candy Apples

The perfect recipe in a pinch is to follow the same instructions for creating traditional caramel apples, but you’ll want to add a bit of black food dye to the mixture before dipping your apples. This gives a dark, shiny and intimidating texture perfect for Halloween in Stamford, CT. Give them an extra cool look by using sticks from the yard in lieu of popsicle sticks as a handle.

5. Halloween Crispy Treats

Again, make these goodies as you usually do, but add food coloring such as black, orange, red, or green to your melted marshmallows before adding the crispy cereal. Make several small batches to create a variety plate that perfectly complements your Halloween decor.

Bowl of Popcorn

7 Essentials for a Scary Movie Night

Bowl of PopcornLooking to host a stellar scary movie night? Hosting a scary movie night is a bit different than hosting a normal movie night. You’ll need a few essentials to make it a real hit. We’ve prepared a list that you can follow to make it an event to remember.

1. Schedule It in Advance

Make sure that everyone who you’d like to attend is available. These days, it’s tough to make sure everyone can make it if the event isn’t planned. Plan ahead and you’ll have a great scary movie night.

2. Turn Off All Lights and No Phones

Want to make it really scary? Turn off every light in your home. This will make the scary scenes that much more spooky. Also, have a no phone rule! The last thing you want is people checking their phone during the movie.

3. Have Blankets

Even though you want your guests to fully experience the scary movie, you also want them to have security blankets just in case. Make blankets available so that people can hide under them.

4. Have Popcorn and Drinks

For scary movie night and any type of gathering, you want to take care of your guests. Have plenty of popcorn ready and make some refreshing drinks available.

5. Choose the Right Movie

Put plenty of time into your movie selection. Find a movie that nobody has seen before, or pick an absolute classic that people will enjoy seeing again. If you’re picking a movie to scare people, watch it by yourself beforehand to make sure that it’s scary.

6. Provide Ample Space for Everyone

Having a movie night on the couch can be a classic way to experience cinema. However, the couch may not be able to accommodate everyone. When this happens, make sure you have extra pillows available for people to place on the ground and sit on.

7. Talk About it After

As the credits start rolling, open up the conversation about the movie. What scared people the most? Which parts did they like the best? Which parts were the cheesiest (if any)? Now is the time to talk and discuss.

Our apartment homes are perfect for hosting scary movie nights. If you’re looking for apartments in Stamford, look no further! Call us to schedule a time to tour our floor plans.
