Residents who live in our modern apartment homes get to enjoy designer kitchens with stainless steel appliances. Stainless steel is known for resisting scratches and stains and will keep its matchless beauty for years of service. To keep your stainless steel appliances spotless, here are four tips for cleaning and maintenance.
Stainless Steel Cleaning Tips
Only Use a Cotton Cloth for Wiping
A cotton cloth is the best material for cleaning stainless steel appliances. You should never use bristle brushes, paper towels, steel wool or anything that is rough. Paper towels may leave scratches and will always leave lint behind.
Protect the Stainless Steel Surface
The beauty of stainless steel is that it is a very smooth, nonporous surface that inhibits bacteria growth. To maintain the pristine surface, avoid putting items on a stainless steel appliance that may scratch the surface material. Since stainless steel has a low nickel content, magnets will not adhere to the surface; therefore, use suction cups or other removable hooks to hang pictures and lists on stainless steel appliances.
Use Natural Cleaning Solutions
The best way to keep your stainless steel appliances spotless is to use cleaning solutions taken right from your cabinets. Spray the appliance with undiluted vinegar to clean away dirt and fingertip stains, then dampen a cotton cloth with olive oil and polish in the direction of the grain. If the appliance is very soiled, cleaning with dishwashing liquid and water may be required. Mineral oil can also be used to restore brilliance after cleaning.
Polish in the Direction of the Grain
If you polish stainless steel against the grain, you risk scratching the surface. You can determine the direction of the grain by close inspection of the finish lines. Another method to determine the grain direction is to notice if you feel any resistance when wiping the metal surface. If you do feel roughness, then you are going against the grain of the stainless steel.
